Cafe society

New on the menu for 2015 – our cafe society meet-ups. Step away from your desk and out into the caffeine dens of Perth’s thriving cafe culture. It’s a steaming hot way to escape the daily grind and get to know your fellow editors in a stimulating new setting. One cup of coffee could lead to a million things.

Our cafe society events will replace three of our Tuesday night networking meetings this year. This will be a great way for new members (and all) to get to know each other and share stories and ideas.

The first one will be brunch in Subiaco on Saturday 18 April. More information is available here. We’ll be shaking it up, though – different days, times and suburbs – to suit the broad spread of our membership.

Enjoy plenty of time for relaxed conversation and networking over good food and coffee. Hope to see you at one of these events soon.

Position paper on new Style manual

By the end of our October networking meeting, ‘Defending the barricades—you, me and the Style manual’, attendees were in agreement: Australian editors need a new edition of the Style manual. However, it was evident from the discussion of the evening that there was no clear path to attaining this goal.

The many problems and possible solutions have been distilled into a position paper that can now be read online. This has been developed by SoE(WA) members Michèle Drouart, Satima Flavell, Helen Renwick and Ilsa Sharp, who formed a working group after the meeting to research and explore the future of the Style manual.

It is the hope of the working group and the committee of SoE(WA) that this paper will prompt greater conversation and forward movement at the national level.

Hilary is a highly experienced science and medical editor, and trainer. Her background is in science. She has a PhD in biochemistry and spent 20 years working in research laboratories and universities in the UK, France and Zimbabwe. A Master of Science (communications) led her into a career in science editing in 1999.

John started his own training and development business in January 1997 as a licensee for Leadership Management Australia. He has 27 years experience in engineering, customer service, sales and management roles. Today, John is an experienced business person, business consultant, qualified facilitator and trainer, public speaker and ‘business ready for sale’ coach. His extensive knowledge is valuable for editors in any field.

Editing is an occupation that can be done from home—for at least part of the time. Rhonda has worked full-time from home since 2007. In this presentation, she shares her telecommuting experiences and the pros and cons of working remotely from a corporate office. Rhonda Bracey started her technical communication business in WA in 1999.

Margaret is a highly experienced editor and professional writer who has written broadly for newspapers, magazines, and corporate organisations. Until recently, Margaret was managing editor of corporate publications at Curtin University, a position she held for more than six years.

Georgina is an experienced editor working with the Department of Agriculture and Food in Perth. Recently her work has concentrated on the department’s new website.

2014 IPEd accreditation exam date announced

The fifth IPEd accreditation exam will be held on Saturday 3 May 2014. Like the previous four exams, this will be a pen and paper exam.

Passing the IPEd accreditation exam demonstrates an editor’s professional competence and understanding of editing standards, skills and knowledge.

Registrations for the exam open on Monday 6 January and close on Monday 7 April. The cut-off date for early bird registrations and payments is Friday 7 March. Ensure you are a financial member of the society to take advantage of the lower exam fees for society members. All registrations must be made on the registration form (see note below) and accompanied by the relevant fee. All fees, however paid, must be received by IPEd by close of business on 7 April.

The exam fees are:

Financial members of a society of editors:
Sitting first time: $570; early bird $540
Re-sitting: $285; early bird $270

Non-members of a society of editors:
Sitting first time: $725; early bird $690
Re-sitting: $362; early bird $345

GST is not applicable. Members of a society who are not financial at the time of registration will be charged the non-member fee. Exam fees may be tax deductible.

The fee has been calculated as the minimum required to cover exam costs in 2014. It is based on a target number of applicants and, if this target is not reached, the Accreditation Board may postpone the exam until 2015. There will be no limit placed on the number of candidates who may sit the exam; all candidates who register and pay the fee by the closing date will be accommodated.

Two sample exams are available from the IPEd website. Both sample exams are very good indicators of what you can expect in May, and trialling them will help you decide whether you are ready for the real thing. It is recommended that you not attempt the exam unless you have at least three years’ full-time professional editing experience. All societies of editors will be organising pre-exam activities to help prepare candidates.

The ingredients for editing cookbooks with Jude Blereau

Jude has been involved with the organic and wholefoods industry for more than 18 years. Her focus is on helping people learn about good food — what it truly is, where to get it, how to use it — and to give them the tools and information they need to make healthy eating a part of their everyday lives. Jude believes healthy food both nourishes and delights. She has published four cookbooks, the most recent of which, Wholefood Baking, was released in May, 2013.

At our meeting Jude will share her experiences and demonstrate her talents both as a writer and as a chef.

How to edit poetry, spoken word style

The way words flow onto the page or into one’s ear is important. It is more important when it comes to poetry, lyrics and spoken word. Come along to the next meeting to find out how words are used to emphasize, seduce, trick, cajole and entice the listener and indulge your ears instead of your eyes with language.

Among the performers at this month’s meeting will be society member and Perth-based poet Jackson who teaches poetry and recently returned from a national tour. Come along and enjoy a free glass of wine.

We’re 21!             

An evening of reminiscence and celebration

The Society of Editors (WA) Inc. was inaugurated in 1992. We are hosting this evening as a celebration of the society’s 21st year. Founding members James Hansen, Amanda Curtin and Anne Surma will speak about their connection to the society and relate how their participation has helped other editors. Current members are also welcome to share how the society has helped them develop their careers. Members may have moved to other cities or roles but they served to solidify the foundation of our editors group today. Please invite other editors!

Speaker biographies

James Hansen

James Hansen joined the society in its foundation year and is an honorary life member. He was a committee member for many years. Now retired, James has been a high school teacher (English and geography), educational media producer, equal employment opportunity officer (Education Department of Western Australia), editor, and lecturer in traditional English grammar (at the meeting, you can buy his little book Take Charge! Using apostrophes and plurals correctly: an easy, friendly guide). James has also published a couple of short stories.

Dr Amanda Curtin

Amanda Curtin has been a freelance book editor for nearly 30 years and now sits on both sides of the red pen. She is the author of two novels (Elemental and The Sinkings) and a collection of short stories (Inherited), has a PhD in Writing and is accredited (AE) with the Institute of Professional Editors. She joined the Society of Editors WA in its first year, when the most important piece of editorial technology was a red pen (along with a box of HB pencils, an eraser, a pencil sharpener and many bottles of whiteout).

 

Dr Anne Surma

Anne Surma is a senior lecturer in the English and Creative Arts program at Murdoch University. She teaches at undergraduate level and also supervises several postgraduate students working on topics ranging from creative writing to literary representations of cultural identity. Anne has also worked in private industry as an editor and writer and as a workshop facilitator and consultant, advising on communication strategy and practice. She has written book chapters and refereed journal articles, as well as two monographs: Public and professional writing: ethics, imagination and rhetoric (Palgrave 2005) and Imagining the cosmopolitan in public and professional writing (Palgrave 2013). Anne holds the honorary title of Distinguished Editor, conferred by the Institute of Professional Editors, and between 2006 and 2011 she was the WA delegate on the IPEd Council. Here Anne led the process for revising and updating the ‘Guidelines for editing research theses’, which were nationally endorsed by the Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies of Australian universities in November 2010.
