Position paper on new Style manual

By the end of our October networking meeting, ‘Defending the barricades—you, me and the Style manual’, attendees were in agreement: Australian editors need a new edition of the Style manual. However, it was evident from the discussion of the evening that there was no clear path to attaining this goal.

The many problems and possible solutions have been distilled into a position paper that can now be read online. This has been developed by SoE(WA) members Michèle Drouart, Satima Flavell, Helen Renwick and Ilsa Sharp, who formed a working group after the meeting to research and explore the future of the Style manual.

It is the hope of the working group and the committee of SoE(WA) that this paper will prompt greater conversation and forward movement at the national level.

IPEd conference keynote speakers announced

The organisers of write | edit | index, the 7th IPEd National Editors Conference 2015 are thrilled to announce two well-known Australians as keynote speakers, namely Jackie French and David Astle.

Jackie French is an author of 140 books across a range of genres. Her work includes fiction for adults and children, gardening, history and picture books. She is a passionate advocate for the conservation of wildlife and the planet.

David Astle is well known as the dictionary guy from the television show Letters and Numbers. He is a self-confessed word nerd writing cryptics for the The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.

The conference launches with a day of professional workshops covering topics on editing, indexing, blogging, design and digital markup to name a few. The next two days include four session streams each day, ensuring that there is a session for everyone.

The conference will take place in Canberra from 6–9 May 2015 and early bird registration closes on 20 February.

Hilary is a highly experienced science and medical editor, and trainer. Her background is in science. She has a PhD in biochemistry and spent 20 years working in research laboratories and universities in the UK, France and Zimbabwe. A Master of Science (communications) led her into a career in science editing in 1999.

John started his own training and development business in January 1997 as a licensee for Leadership Management Australia. He has 27 years experience in engineering, customer service, sales and management roles. Today, John is an experienced business person, business consultant, qualified facilitator and trainer, public speaker and ‘business ready for sale’ coach. His extensive knowledge is valuable for editors in any field.

Editing is an occupation that can be done from home—for at least part of the time. Rhonda has worked full-time from home since 2007. In this presentation, she shares her telecommuting experiences and the pros and cons of working remotely from a corporate office. Rhonda Bracey started her technical communication business in WA in 1999.

Margaret is a highly experienced editor and professional writer who has written broadly for newspapers, magazines, and corporate organisations. Until recently, Margaret was managing editor of corporate publications at Curtin University, a position she held for more than six years.

Georgina is an experienced editor working with the Department of Agriculture and Food in Perth. Recently her work has concentrated on the department’s new website.

The ingredients for editing cookbooks with Jude Blereau

Jude has been involved with the organic and wholefoods industry for more than 18 years. Her focus is on helping people learn about good food — what it truly is, where to get it, how to use it — and to give them the tools and information they need to make healthy eating a part of their everyday lives. Jude believes healthy food both nourishes and delights. She has published four cookbooks, the most recent of which, Wholefood Baking, was released in May, 2013.

At our meeting Jude will share her experiences and demonstrate her talents both as a writer and as a chef.

How to edit poetry, spoken word style

The way words flow onto the page or into one’s ear is important. It is more important when it comes to poetry, lyrics and spoken word. Come along to the next meeting to find out how words are used to emphasize, seduce, trick, cajole and entice the listener and indulge your ears instead of your eyes with language.

Among the performers at this month’s meeting will be society member and Perth-based poet Jackson who teaches poetry and recently returned from a national tour. Come along and enjoy a free glass of wine.

Cooking with words

Our guest speaker is Jude Blereau, who will speak on writing and editing a cook book. This is a topic that has been requested a number of times and will be very interesting. So come and enjoy a very different topic. Jude has been asked to bring along her latest cook book for sale, if you would like to purchase on the night, it will be cash only and retail for $45.00. Jude Blereau is a natural foods chef, author, food coach, cooking teacher and real food activist who has been involved with the organic and wholefoods industry for more than 18 years. She first became involved in the natural food industry while living in the US in the late 1980s, where she was inspired by the work being done in health and nutrition. She returns there often.

In 1997, Jude co-founded The Earth Market, a much loved wholefood store and café in Perth, Western Australia. In 2001, she founded Whole Food Cooking. Her focus is on helping people learn about good food—what it truly is, where to get it, how to use it—and to give them the tools and information they need to make healthy eating a part of their everyday lives.

Jude released her first cookbook Wholefood … heal, nourish, delight in March 2006, and her second Coming Home To Eat … Wholefood for the Family in March 2008.

August networking meeting — preparing for the accreditation exam

Topic: Preparing for the accreditation exam
Speakers: Accredited editors who have passed the accreditation exam

This will be an interactive session facilitated by Accredited Editors Cheryl Bettridge, Michele Drouart, Amanda Curtin, Margaret McNally, Jan Knight, Sue Thomson and Kerry Coyle. Bring your Style manual and any other resources you use with you.

The Curtin Uni publication, Treading water while the sharks are circling, designed as a guide for first year uni students sitting exams is a useful guide for anyone who has an exam looming and current Australian standards for editing practice will be distributed to all those who would like one.

The format will be something along the following lines:
Part 1: Tackling the exam 10 mins
This section covers time management, what to do first, using your strengths to their best advantage when choosing questions, etc.
Part 2: Be prepared 10 mins
This includes what to take in to the exam and how to make best use of the website.
Part 3: Survival guide 10 mins
How to remain calm and combat your nerves; hints and tips. General questions.
Part 4: Practice makes perfect (all panellists to assist group) 60 mins

Exam (apart from 10 mins to write name and number on each page and 30 mins reading time) is 3 hours. Use reading time to choose questions.

• Part 1 (25 mins)
Distribute practice papers and read intro. Read Part 1 instructions. Give 20 mins for group to answer the 24 short questions (allocation in exam is 20% so approx 36 mins). Give answers.

• Part 2 (15 mins)
Read page 6 and do some of the style sheet together as not everyone may have done one before. Examples.

• Part 3 (20 mins)
4 of the 12 need to be answered in approximately 72 mins. Let’s look at question 1.  4 of the 6 parts 1.1 to 1.6 need to be done (approx 5 mins to spend on each). Allow everyone to choose four and do them in 20 mins (cross of 5 minute intervals). They can then look at their answers and see how they went.

Hopefully these exercises reassure people that they can work within the exam’s timeframes. Remember some areas will be easier for an individual than others, so the percentage split is really just a guide.

Christmas celebration 2011

Thanks to everyone who came along to our Indian Christmas dinner at the Buddha Bar to celebrate the end of the year for the Society. We had secret santa pressies and if you weren’t happy you could swap with one you liked, Jan organised some fabulous quizzes, and we consumed a delicious banquet under the ever-watchful eye of an enormous Buddha. All to the music of Whitney Houston and Madonna!

We look forward to seeing you all next year. We won’t have a normal networking session in February but we will be having a workshop on Saturday 18 February which we’ll tell you about later. Then it’s our AGM on 6 March where we elect/re-elect the office bearers and hopefully welcome some new hands in the new year.

The committee wishes all our members a very safe, happy and productive Christmas and new year holiday!
