Mentoring program – new status

At the IPEd plenary session of the Write|Edit|Index conference, our mentoring program became part of IPEd’s responsibility. We are now known officially as the IPEd National Mentoring Program for Editors, as a result of an agreement signed by the CSE President, Alan Cummine, and the IPEd Chair, Kerry Davies. The systems we’ve put in place all remain the same, Canberra continues to administer the program nationally with the team of state/territory coordinators working with the national coordinators. We are delighted to have IPED’s formal recognition and support.

At the Mentoring plenary session of the conference, coordinators sat on the podium and were introduced to the delegates. Your local coordinator is your first port of call for information about the mentoring program and for advice during a mentorship, should you need it. We are dedicated to helping mentorships be successful, personally rewarding pairings. If you don’t have your local coordinator’s details, contact either Elizabeth or Ted (see below) and we’ll pass your request on.

We’re pretty chuffed with this outcome – we’ve been working towards it, but it’s happened in two short years, and we’re still somewhat bemused by the speed at which it has happened. Heartfelt thanks to all the coordinators for help, swapping ideas and generally promoting mentoring to the whole membership of all current societies.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BE PART OF IT?
This brings me to a topic I get asked about sometimes – just who can be mentored? Is it only for new editors? Or can senior, experienced editors be mentored? The answer is – ANYONE can be mentored and ANYONE can be a mentor. It all depends on what you want to be guided in, and what skills you have that you can share. We have on our program very young, inexperienced editors, struggling to get a foothold in the competitive editing profession; and we have editors near to traditional retirement age, with lots of experience behind them, but wanting to perhaps understand more about new technologies and spread their wings into newer areas of editing – such editors are often mentored by much younger colleagues who have grown up with technology or work in legal, medical or scientific editing. You don’t have to be old and white-haired to be a mentor, and you don’t have to be straight out of editing school to be a mentee. If you meet the basic requirements – membership of an editing society at any level, have attended a course or workshop about copy-editing and proofreading, and have at least a little experience in copy-editing – you qualify. Just ask for the mentor or mentee application form and we’ll help you with the rest.

Cafe society

New on the menu for 2015 – our cafe society meet-ups. Step away from your desk and out into the caffeine dens of Perth’s thriving cafe culture. It’s a steaming hot way to escape the daily grind and get to know your fellow editors in a stimulating new setting. One cup of coffee could lead to a million things.

Our cafe society events will replace three of our Tuesday night networking meetings this year. This will be a great way for new members (and all) to get to know each other and share stories and ideas.

The first one will be brunch in Subiaco on Saturday 18 April. More information is available here. We’ll be shaking it up, though – different days, times and suburbs – to suit the broad spread of our membership.

Enjoy plenty of time for relaxed conversation and networking over good food and coffee. Hope to see you at one of these events soon.

IPEd conference keynote speakers announced

The organisers of write | edit | index, the 7th IPEd National Editors Conference 2015 are thrilled to announce two well-known Australians as keynote speakers, namely Jackie French and David Astle.

Jackie French is an author of 140 books across a range of genres. Her work includes fiction for adults and children, gardening, history and picture books. She is a passionate advocate for the conservation of wildlife and the planet.

David Astle is well known as the dictionary guy from the television show Letters and Numbers. He is a self-confessed word nerd writing cryptics for the The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.

The conference launches with a day of professional workshops covering topics on editing, indexing, blogging, design and digital markup to name a few. The next two days include four session streams each day, ensuring that there is a session for everyone.

The conference will take place in Canberra from 6–9 May 2015 and early bird registration closes on 20 February.

Australian editing qualifications

Editors come from a variety of fields, with varying qualifications and degrees which have helped prepare them for a career spent polishing text. At the society’s November meeting, we will profile Australian degrees and courses which editors have used as jumping boards to their careers, or professional development for their skill sets.

The ingredients for editing cookbooks with Jude Blereau

Jude has been involved with the organic and wholefoods industry for more than 18 years. Her focus is on helping people learn about good food — what it truly is, where to get it, how to use it — and to give them the tools and information they need to make healthy eating a part of their everyday lives. Jude believes healthy food both nourishes and delights. She has published four cookbooks, the most recent of which, Wholefood Baking, was released in May, 2013.

At our meeting Jude will share her experiences and demonstrate her talents both as a writer and as a chef.

Christmas on the foreshore

Join us for some informal networking and seasonal fun on Sunday December 2 at 5 pm, at the South Perth foreshore.

We’ll meet at the Narrows end of Sir James Mitchell Park, adjacent to the car park that’s at the end of South Perth Esplanade. There are BBQs and toilet facilities and plenty of shade. Bring along your picnic or BBQ food and we will supply snacks, wine, soft drink and games! (A folding chair might also be a good idea.)

Defamation in publications
At our final networking meeting for 2012, guest speaker
John Hammond, Director of Hammond Legal, will take us
into the tricky topic of defamation, something that every
editor should know about.

Everyone concerned with the writing and distribution, or
republishing, of defamatory matter may be liable – the writer,
editor, publisher, printer and, to some extent, distributor, although
it is a defence if secondary distributors such as librarians and
newsagents prove they did not know that the publication contained
defamatory matter.

Cooking with words

Our guest speaker is Jude Blereau, who will speak on writing and editing a cook book. This is a topic that has been requested a number of times and will be very interesting. So come and enjoy a very different topic. Jude has been asked to bring along her latest cook book for sale, if you would like to purchase on the night, it will be cash only and retail for $45.00. Jude Blereau is a natural foods chef, author, food coach, cooking teacher and real food activist who has been involved with the organic and wholefoods industry for more than 18 years. She first became involved in the natural food industry while living in the US in the late 1980s, where she was inspired by the work being done in health and nutrition. She returns there often.

In 1997, Jude co-founded The Earth Market, a much loved wholefood store and café in Perth, Western Australia. In 2001, she founded Whole Food Cooking. Her focus is on helping people learn about good food—what it truly is, where to get it, how to use it—and to give them the tools and information they need to make healthy eating a part of their everyday lives.

Jude released her first cookbook Wholefood … heal, nourish, delight in March 2006, and her second Coming Home To Eat … Wholefood for the Family in March 2008.
