Technical writer and editor
I specialise in the editing of multi-authored engineering documents, such as feasibility studies, making them 'speak with one voice'.
After 20 years in Chemical Engineering, I'm now concentrating on my love of editing and technical writing.
I also produce high quality, easy-to-read technical documents, including:
- standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- training manuals
- regulatory & compliance documents
- functional specifications
- operating manuals
- tutorials
- information sheets
- scopes of work, etc.
These documents can be tailored for a general or specific audience (e.g. operators, technical personnel, managers, regulators).
Areas of work include adult fiction, creative non-fiction, general non-fiction (e.g. history, biography), academic, business, EFL.
Focuses on enhancing clarity and impact while maintaining the work's integrity and voice.
Recent clients include Fremantle Press, Black Swan Press and maybe you.

Obsession with the English language - passion for its versatility and creativity, combined with commitment to maintaining its correct use!
Experience
Twenty years experience in preparing business reports and correspondence, including review and editing of work of subordinates. Includes responsibility for structure and content of report, style and language, formatting and consistency. Assignments varied from one page emails and letters through to technical reports running into hundreds of pages with multiple appendices. As the on-the-spot MSWord guru, I handled all the word processing technicalities too. In my career, I have had to write reports in a variety of different styles and tones - formal annual reports, critical audit findings, sensitive employee records, responses to members of the public on contentious issues.
Having worked for ten years in Africa, I am used to working with people for whom English is not their first language.
I am meticulous in my approach, paying great attention to detail.
I am also a writer, mostly writing for my own pleasure. I am available for ghostwriting.
Examples
Proofreading local history book for UWA Press.
Proofreading collection of short stories for UWA Press.
Manuscript assessment for Ocean Publishing - personal memoirs.
Copyeditor of G-Spot, the Edith Cowan University student magazine.
Review of PhD thesis to correctly number and format all headings and labels for figures and tables. Creation of automated table of contents and lists of figures and tables. Review of consistency of capitalisation of key terms and page layouts.
Proofreading student assignments, particularly for foreign students for whom English is not their first language.

Experience
I spent six years as Assistant Editor for the international biomedical journal Respirology which is published by Blackwell.
I have a good grasp of general biological and medical terminology.
Prior to working on the journal I taught English and Business Studies at high school and TAFE.
I have been operating a freelance proofreading and editing service for just over 1 year.
Examples
On Respirology, editing the English on manuscripts submitted by researchers for whom English is a second language. This included checking that my interpretation of their words matched what they actually meant.
In PhD thesis on geophysics, the word 'not' had been omitted in the Abstract, which then contradicted the whole thesis. Neither the student nor supervisors noticed because they skimmed the Abstract which they had read too many times.
Categories
Academic manuscripts and theses, especially in the biological and medical fields, business proposals, tender documents, annual reports which may have been written by a number of people and need to be put into a single cohesive document, information brochures and newsletters.

I have worked as a writer and editor for many years, mostly involved with agriculture and natural resource management. I currently have a full-time job but do some extra freelance work in my own time, mainly evenings and weekends. Good scientific editing (and writing) for me should follow the ABC principle with Accuracy, Brevity and Clarity. Keeping things lively and remaining very conscious of the target audience are principles I work hard at following.
