PANEL DISCUSSION
We are delighted to have a panel of three speakers from the bookselling industry: Alan Sheardown from Crow Books, Jane Seaton from Beaufort Street Books, and Roberta Elsholz from Chapter and Page. The AGM event is to celebrate the entry of three relatively new ‘bricks and mortar’ booksellers into the industry and to hear what they have to say about the challenges of establishing new businesses in the changing world of bookselling. To underscore the theme of celebration, we’re having champagne and strawberries.

Thanks to everyone who came along to our Indian Christmas dinner at the Buddha Bar to celebrate the end of the year for the Society. We had secret santa pressies and if you weren’t happy you could swap with one you liked, Jan organised some fabulous quizzes, and we consumed a delicious banquet under the ever-watchful eye of an enormous Buddha. All to the music of Whitney Houston and Madonna!
We look forward to seeing you all next year. We won’t have a normal networking session in February but we will be having a workshop on Saturday 18 February which we’ll tell you about later. Then it’s our AGM on 6 March where we elect/re-elect the office bearers and hopefully welcome some new hands in the new year.

Fundamentals of science editing
We are very fortunate to have Professor David Lindsay as our guest speaker this month.
Professor Lindsay travels the world teaching researchers about scientific communication. Now an Emeritus Professor at The University of Western Australia, he developed and for many years taught units in science and its communication, and scientific extension, to undergraduates in the Faculty of Agriculture.
Professor Lindsay wrote A Guide to Scientific Writing, which can be found on the bookshelves of most scientists. His new book Scientific Writing=Thinking in Words was published in February 2011.
If you wish to improve the quality of your editing overall or if you have questions about editing technical writing, this is one networking meeting not to miss! Members and non-members are welcome, so bring your friends.

]]>Australian Book Review, based in Melbourne, seeks applications for an Editorial Intern to help edit, produce and present Australia’s foremost independent literary magazine. This is a perfect opportunity for recent university graduates seeking an entrée into publishing.
This Internship – worth $20,000 and supported by The Ian Potter Foundation – is one of the few intensive, paid editorial training programs of its kind in Australian publishing. It reflects ABR’s long-standing commitment to fostering new editorial talent, and extends the magazine’s established volunteer intern program; widely regarded as a ‘finishing school’ for editing and publishing graduates.

IPEd webminder
The Institute of Professional Editors Limited (IPEd) seeks a part-time webminder to join its team of voluntary workers.
It is estimated that fulfilling the role will require, on average, between 2 and 5 hours per week.
IPEd would like you to:
- upload information to the website as requested by IPEd’s company secretary, councillors, committees and member societies of editors
- identify material of value and interest to editors and add this to the website
- update the website as required and archive out-of-date information
- maintain the website’s members’ database.
The person we are looking for will:
- have experience with website content management systems
- be an editor and a member of an Australian society of editors
- support IPEd’s objectives.

James Hansen and Anne Surma will answer questions on grammar and punctuation, adding their knowledge and skills to tricky problems posed by members. If you have ever had a difficult text to edit or want to know why a certain rule applies to a particular text, if you hate seeing apostrophes put in the wrong places, or you don’t know the best way to use a semicolon, come to this workshop. Even if you’ve been an editor or proofreader for years, we guarantee you’ll learn something new!
The presenters
James Hansen joined the society in its foundation year and is an honorary life member. He was a committee member for many years. Now retired, James has been a high school teacher (English and geography), educational media producer, equal employment opportunity officer (Education Department of Western Australia), editor, and lecturer in traditional English grammar (at the meeting, you can buy his book Take Charge! Using apostrophes and plurals correctly: an easy, friendly guide). James has also published a couple of short stories.
Dr Anne Surma lectures at Murdoch University in the English and Creative Arts program. Anne has worked in private industry as an editor and writer and, more recently, as a workshop facilitator and consultant, advising on communication strategy and practice. Anne’s research interests include public communication as ethical discourse and creative practice; corporate responsibility; and discursive approaches to dominant and marginalised narratives in public and organisational stories. She has published chapters and refereed journal articles from her work, and her monograph, Public and professional writing: ethics, imagination and rhetoric, was published by Palgrave in 2005. Currently, Anne is under contract with Palgrave to produce her second monograph, The power of professional writing: effecting social change in a global culture. An editorial board member of two international journals, Journal of Communication Management and Prism, Anne also holds the honorary title of Distinguished Editor, conferred by the national organisation, the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd).
Our September networking session will be a couple of weeks after the 5th National Editors Conference in Sydney. As a few of us from the committee will be attending (and no doubt there are other Society members who may want to contribute), we decided that at our networking session we would give a guided tour of the conference where we’ll present some highlights from different perspectives.
At the same meeting, we will be holding a vote about the increase in the membership fees.

The publishing industry in Perth is not large but it is varied and vibrant, and it might surprise you to know how many small local publishers are finding niches in the industry and making a stellar name for themselves.
In August, our guests are two such publishers: S.J. (Steven) Finch, editor of the online magazine dotdotdash, and Tehani Wessely, publisher/editor of speculative fiction press FableCroft Publications.
Steven and Tehani will talk about their experiences in producing and promoting their works, and how editing fits into that process. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions, discussion and networking, and books will be available for sale.
S.J. Finch Steven Finch is a current PhD student at Curtin University, member of the Perth Zine Collective, as well as the editor and co-founder of dotdotdash magazine. dotdotdash is a tri-annual creative publication that launched its first issue in September 2009, and publishes creative literature and art with a focus on Australian and especially Western Australian writers. Since the publication of issue 2, the magazine has been distributed in WA and Victoria, and has attracted mention and favourable review in The Australian, The West Australian, Indigo, Sixthousand and The Canning Times. The seventh issue, ‘Sacred’, is being launched later this month.
Tehani Wessely is firmly entrenched in Australian speculative fiction and small press. As well as her role as publisher/editor of FableCroft, she has edited for Twelfth Planet Press, and judged for the Aurealis Awards, the WA Premier’s Book Awards and the CBCA Book of the Year. She also writes reviews, non-fiction and interviews for ASif! and Fiction Focus, and in 2008 was awarded the Ditmar (Australia’s best-known award in the scifi/fiction/fantasy genre) for ‘Best New Talent’. Her latest project for FableCroft is an anthology titled Apocalypse Hope (currently open to submissions).

Scope
The Society of Editors (WA) Inc. is a professional association for editors and people interested in editing in Western Australia. Similar societies in each state have formed a national body, Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd). IPEd holds a national editors conference every two years. In 2011, the Society of Editors NSW will host the conference. In 2013, the Society of Editors (WA) Inc. will host the conference in Fremantle, Western Australia. The Society of Editors (WA) Inc. requires a conference logo to accompany our presentation to the 2011 national conference in Sydney in September.
The logo will feature on all conference promotional materials. About 250 to 300 people will view the logo at the 2011 and 2013 conferences. Conference promotions will reach a wider audience in the years 2011 to 2013 between the conferences.
Delivery mechanism and marketing objectives
Promotional materials for the conference include three websites (SoEWA, IPEd and the conference website), letterheads, email newsletters and mailing lists, brochures, satchels, presentation slides and banners. The logo therefore must comply with advised specifications. The marketing objective of the logo is to communicate the theme of the 2013 conference Editing across borders to potential attendees and persuade them to attend.

The logo must be presented in several formats as outlined below.

Description of target audience
Generally, there are more women than men in professions related to editing. About 80% of the participants at the 2009 Adelaide conference were women. The majority of editors are over 45 years old and define education as their subject area. Editors work ‘in house’ for publishing houses, government departments and large companies or as freelance contractors. Freelance editors often work from home and might be juggling family and other responsibilities. Editing has a relatively high proportion of part-time workers. Editors have a wide range of interests and hobbies, but the one thing that unites them is a love of words and reading. They are usually very well educated and interested in the arts. Members of the Society include people who edit fiction and non-fiction books, government reports, business communications, science and literary journals and academic theses. We hope to attract people to the conference from areas as diverse as education, government, corporate, newspapers, magazines and journals. We are targeting editors from Western Australia, other states of Australia, and the Asia Pacific.
Message objectives
The 2013 conference theme is Editing across borders which has three broad conference streams.
- Editing beyond traditional publishing – looking at editing as a broad field beyond ‘just’ books and publishing houses to incorporate documents that require help with literacy (Spell better. Sell better! – editing for business success), government publications, academic papers, scientific reports
- Editing for other media – print, web, social networking, digital publishing and eReaders
- Editing across national, language and cultural borders. We plan to look at topics that discuss how editors located in one city can edit for clients remotely. We also plan to look at the way English-language editors can help clients from many different languages and cultures.
