What is PD?

Everyone is enthusiastic about professional development – let’s have more of it, is the usual cry. More workshops, more training, more assessments. But what is it, really?

A quick survey of the web turned up at least sixteen areas under the heading Professional Development (PD): administration; communication; continuous improvement; culture change; customer service; human resources; leadership and strategy; management and supervision; MicroSoft Office capability; personal development; project management; sales training; team building; time management and productivity; and training, facilitation and presentation.

Leadership and strategy

Tonight we will use brain storming and small group discussions to explore one component of PD, Leadership and Strategy.

To keep our feet in the ‘real world’, we’ll use the national editors conference (Brisbane 13 – 15 September 2017) as a kind of case study. It oozes with professional development. For example, the conference theme is ‘Advancing our profession’. And there is the ‘Emerging Leaders Forum’ (see box) on Thursday afternoon.

I am so looking forward to hearing the voices and views of our younger members.
