Defending the barricades—you, me and the Style manual

21 October, 2014

We are preparing a workshop for the SoE(WA) general meeting on 21 October 2014 which we believe will assist members in their daily wrestle with changing usage. Our title is ‘Defending the barricades—you, me and the Style manual’.

Our title is rather provocative, but that’s how we feel about the situation! The current Style manual (Sixth edition) came out in 2002—twelve years ago. Alas, a seventh edition is nowhere in sight, and other authoritative standards may be emerging. Will we die defending the reader from ampersands?

We can’t cover every aspect of copy editing in one evening, so we are looking mainly at printed examples of—how shall we phrase it?—egregious usages, even ones that make your hair stand on end!

You will have a chance to try your copy editing skills on some print advertising. We have some beaut examples and we would be delighted to have more contributions from you. Please send hard copy or scanned examples of those ‘errors’ you love to hate. Aside from ‘both’, mine is the ‘&’ symbol.

You can email them as attachments to James Hansen (jehansen@westnet.com.au) or Jan Knight (jknight@flyingedits.com.au). Please put “Barricades” in the subject line. Or, you can post them to James Hansen: 19 Hillside Crescent, Gooseberry Hill, WA 6076.

We must receive them by Saturday 18 October in order to include them in the workshop.
