I completed a BSc (geology and geophysics) at the University of Sydney in 1973 and then worked for 15 years as a geologist/geophysicist in the petroleum exploration industry in Australia, Southeast Asia, and the UK. I was led into the field of editing by frequent requests from co-workers to ‘tidy up’ their written work. After finding my true vocation, in 1988 I began working for the Western Australian government in Perth where I edited geoscience books and maps published by the Geological Survey of Western Australia and, in later years, managed their publication section. Since 2004 I have been a freelance editor working mainly in the fields of earth and environmental science. My clients include several Australian government departments and many individual scientists. Much of my work is for authors with English as their second language. I have more than 25 years of experience as an editor and have edited numerous books and reports published by Australian geological surveys and, at last count, more than 350 academic papers written for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals. Most of my copyediting and proofreading is for authors writing about earth and environmental science, but I happily work with other scientific disciplines if asked.
