The April networking meeting will focus on website design and marketing. Based in Fremantle, Media on Mars design  solutions is a company passionate about great web  design and boasts a talented group of web and print  designers. We are lucky to have  Kammi Rapsey, principal, to present about web  design and how to make it work for you.  Kammi’s passion is aesthetics. Her unique approach to design draws on her background in fine arts and her appreciation of good communication. As well as being a designer, Kammi is a qualified art and media teacher. Her capabilities extend to photography, three-dimensional design, art direction and web design.

In addition to Kammi, committee member Marisa Wikramanayake will present about various aspects of websites, including the basics of how a site is built, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and marketing. She’ll also show how we as editors can use our websites, and how we can help our clients get the best out of the website text they send us.

RSVP 13 April 2012 to Robin Barnes on barney9277@optusnet.com.au.

September: After the conference

Our September networking session will be a couple of weeks after the 5th National Editors Conference in Sydney. As a few of us from the committee will be attending (and no doubt there are other Society members who may want to contribute), we decided that at our networking session we would give a guided tour of the conference where we’ll present some highlights from different perspectives.

At the same meeting, we will be holding a vote about the increase in the membership fees.

A new year brings adjustments

It was a sad start to the year with the news of Mabel Kaplan’s passing. Her funeral was a celebration of her life, personality, and dedicated commitment to her community and family. Michele has written a wonderful piece for this month’s Bookworm in honour of Mabel and the contribution she made to her community. We will miss you, Mabel.

The year has geared into action and the committee has started planning this year’s events. Once we have confirmations, we will publicize our events schedule in Bookworm each month. We sent out a request for suggestions and have tried to incorporate some of those we received:  aspects of English usage (James Hansen);  editing for fiction, grammar points, indexing (Liz Tyndall); editing scientific works (Deb Fitzpatrick); romance writing (Carla Morris); dotdotdash magazine (Chris Walker); editing academic papers, making a personal website (Mary Elgar). Thanks to those people who responded.
