Cafe society

New on the menu for 2015 – our cafe society meet-ups. Step away from your desk and out into the caffeine dens of Perth’s thriving cafe culture. It’s a steaming hot way to escape the daily grind and get to know your fellow editors in a stimulating new setting. One cup of coffee could lead to a million things.

Our cafe society events will replace three of our Tuesday night networking meetings this year. This will be a great way for new members (and all) to get to know each other and share stories and ideas.

The first one will be brunch in Subiaco on Saturday 18 April. More information is available here. We’ll be shaking it up, though – different days, times and suburbs – to suit the broad spread of our membership.

Enjoy plenty of time for relaxed conversation and networking over good food and coffee. Hope to see you at one of these events soon.

Position paper on new Style manual

By the end of our October networking meeting, ‘Defending the barricades—you, me and the Style manual’, attendees were in agreement: Australian editors need a new edition of the Style manual. However, it was evident from the discussion of the evening that there was no clear path to attaining this goal.

The many problems and possible solutions have been distilled into a position paper that can now be read online. This has been developed by SoE(WA) members Michèle Drouart, Satima Flavell, Helen Renwick and Ilsa Sharp, who formed a working group after the meeting to research and explore the future of the Style manual.

It is the hope of the working group and the committee of SoE(WA) that this paper will prompt greater conversation and forward movement at the national level.

IPEd conference keynote speakers announced

The organisers of write | edit | index, the 7th IPEd National Editors Conference 2015 are thrilled to announce two well-known Australians as keynote speakers, namely Jackie French and David Astle.

Jackie French is an author of 140 books across a range of genres. Her work includes fiction for adults and children, gardening, history and picture books. She is a passionate advocate for the conservation of wildlife and the planet.

David Astle is well known as the dictionary guy from the television show Letters and Numbers. He is a self-confessed word nerd writing cryptics for the The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.

The conference launches with a day of professional workshops covering topics on editing, indexing, blogging, design and digital markup to name a few. The next two days include four session streams each day, ensuring that there is a session for everyone.

The conference will take place in Canberra from 6–9 May 2015 and early bird registration closes on 20 February.

Represent IPEd at global editing conference in Canada

IPEd is calling for expressions of interest from society members to represent IPEd at the Editing Goes Global 2015 Conference in Toronto, Canada from 12 to 14 June 2015. IPEd will sponsor the speaker’s airfares, four nights’ accommodation in Toronto (11-14 June 2015), airport transfers and the conference registration fee.

It is expected the speaker will be on several panels and deliver on more than one topic. See the list below for the conference sessions.

The speaker must address the current IPEd transition process during one of their sessions and represent IPEd during networking opportunities. The speaker will also be required to prepare a report on the conference for IPEd upon return.

The conference sessions are organised into the following streams:

  • Editing Around the World (organisers would probably ask the speaker to be on a panel somewhere in this stream)
  • Business Practices (freelancing, setting rates, ethics, working from remote locations, crowdsourced editing, etc.)
  • ** Editing Tools (style guides, dictionaries, CreativeSuite, Dreamweaver, PerfectIt, Editorium, etc.)
  • Editing Practices (book doctoring, detecting plagiarism, editing fiction, etc.)
  • How to train editors (organisers are short of sessions for this one, and may remove it from the program)
  • ** Working with self-publishing authors (crowdfunding, distribution, marketing, using focus groups, coaching non-writers, etc.)
  • Networking and mentoring (a series of sessions on the first day, largely aimed at first-time conference attendees)
  • How to run an association for editors (finding work for members, publications, mentoring programs, meeting volunteers’ needs, standards, certification, membership structures and criteria, e-learning)

** These streams have been filled but organisers need sessions for all other streams.

Expressions of interest are due by 25 January 2015 to secretary@iped-editors.org and must include the following:

  • a short synopsis of your paper/s based on the conference sessions
  • a paragraph of your experience and qualifications, including why you would be the best person to represent IPEd at the conference
  • a short synopsis regarding the current IPEd transition process.

Australian editing qualifications

Editors come from a variety of fields, with varying qualifications and degrees which have helped prepare them for a career spent polishing text. At the society’s November meeting, we will profile Australian degrees and courses which editors have used as jumping boards to their careers, or professional development for their skill sets.

The ingredients for editing cookbooks with Jude Blereau

1235280_658984820787615_327826813_nJoin us at our next meeting for an insight into editing cookbooks with chef, author, and food activist Jude Blereau.

Jude has been involved with the organic and wholefoods industry for more than 18 years. Her focus is on helping people learn about good food — what it truly is, where to get it, how to use it — and to give them the tools and information they need to make healthy eating a part of their everyday lives. Jude believes healthy food both nourishes and delights. She has published four cookbooks, the most recent of which, Wholefood Baking, was released in May, 2013.

At our meeting Jude will share her experiences and demonstrate her talents both as a writer and as a chef.

How to edit poetry, spoken word style

The way words flow onto the page or into one’s ear is important. It is more important when it comes to poetry, lyrics and spoken word. Come along to the next meeting to find out how words are used to emphasize, seduce, trick, cajole and entice the listener and indulge your ears instead of your eyes with language.

Among the performers at this month’s meeting will be society member and Perth-based poet Jackson who teaches poetry and recently returned from a national tour. Come along and enjoy a free glass of wine.

Networking meeting 18 June: Taking the axe out of tax

If you answered “yes” to any of the above then you need to come along to our June members meeting where John Nicholls, owner of J Nicholls & Co Chartered Accountants, will be presenting on tax matters and preparation for small businesses. John regularly presents on taxation matters to Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) members and comes personally recommended by several of our society members.
